http://www.tolearnenglish.com/exercises/exercise-english-2/exercise-english-79119.php

LIKE or  AS

Like :

We use it when the second term of the comparison is a noun, a gerund or a pronoun.

Dave looks like his father.  –  Don’t act like me !

Tolearnenglish is like having your own private tutor.

Like can be modified with  adverbs , such as :

just, more, very much, not at all… :

AS :

We use it when the second term of the comparison is a verb, a clause or a preposition.

Don’t do as I do !

It started raining, as I said it would.

Prices are very high, as in the 1990s. (as they were)

As can be used before a noun:

She works as a nurse.

Be careful :

She speaks like a teacher …she is not a teacher.

She speaks as a teacher …she is a teacher.

In addition :

We can use like (or such as)  when giving examples:

He prefers classical composers, like Chopin.

She prefers French actors, such as Delon.

Some other constructions :

We use

like + noun or pronoun

as if/ as though + clauses

with some verbs: feel,look,sound,smell,seem,treat

It looks like rain / It feels like rain.

It looks as if it’s going to rain.

It feels as if it were going to rain.

As and Like Part 2

Published on Learn English | British Council (http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org)

Home > As and Like

As and Like

As and like are often confused since they are both used to compare actions or situations. There are, however, important differences.

As

We use as to talk about job or function.

  • I worked as a shop assistant for 2 years when I was a student.
  • He used his shoe as a hammer to hang the picture up.

In comparisons, the structure ‘as adjective as’ is often used.

  • He’s not as tall as his brother
  • She ran as fast as she could.

In the following comparisons as is a conjunction – it’s followed by a clause with a subject and a verb.

  • He went to Cambridge University, as his father had before him.
  • She’s a talented writer, as most of her family are.
Like

In the following comparisons, like is a preposition and it’s followed by a noun or a pronoun.

  • I’ve been working like a dog all afternoon.
  • None of my brothers are much like me.
  • She looks just like her mother.

Like and As if/As though
Like, as if and as though can all be used to make comparisons. There is no difference in meaning among the 3 forms.

  • You look as if you’ve seen a ghost.
  • You talk as though we’re never going to see each other again.
  • It looks like it’s going to rain.

Expressions with ‘as’
The following expressions all use as.

  • As you know, classes restart on January 15th.
  • I tried using salt as you suggested but the stain still didn’t come out.
  • As we agreed the company will be split 50/50 between us.
  • Their house is the same as ours.

Tag Questions

Tag Questions

http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verbs-questions-tag-positive.htm

You speak English, don’t you?

A tag question is a special construction in English. It is a statement followed by a mini-question. The whole sentence is a “tag question”, and the mini-question at the end is called a “question tag”.

A “tag” is something small that we add to something larger. For example, the little piece of cloth added to a shirt showing size or washing instructions is a tag.

We use tag questions at the end of statements to ask for confirmation. They mean something like: “Am I right?” or “Do you agree?” They are very common in English.

The basic structure is:

statement question tag
+
Positive statement,

negative tag?
Snow is white, isn’t it?

Negative statement,
+
positive tag?
You don’t like me, do you?

Notice that the question tag repeats the auxiliary verb (or main verb when be) from the statement and changes it to negative or positive.

A question tag is the “mini-question” at the end. A tag question is the whole sentence.

We will now look at positive statement tag questions.

Positive Statement Tag Questions

Look at these examples with positive statements. You will see that most of the time, the auxiliary verb from the positive statement is repeated in the tag and changed to negative.

positive statement [+] negative tag [-] notes:
subject auxiliary main verb   auxiliary not personal
pronoun
(same as subject)

You are coming,   are n’t you?
We have finished,   have n’t we?
You do like coffee, do n’t you?
You   like coffee, do n’t you? You (do) like…*
They will help,   wo n’t they? won’t = will not
I can come,   can ‘t I?
We must go,   must n’t we?
He should try harder, should n’t he?
You   are English, are n’t you? no auxiliary for main verb be present & past
John   was there, was n’t he?

*Note that in this example the auxiliary verb do in the statement – “You like coffee,” – is understood and not expressed because the tense is normal present simple. But the question tag uses the do auxiliary to make “don’t you?” It is also possible to say: “You do like coffee, don’t you?”

Let’s now look at negative statement tag questions.

Negative Statement Tag Questions

Look at these examples with negative statements. Notice that the negative verb in the original statement is changed to positive in the tag.

negative statement [-] positive tag [+]
subject auxiliary   main verb     auxiliary personal
pronoun
(same as subject)
It is n’t raining,     is it?
We have never seen   that, have we?
You do n’t like   coffee, do you?
They will not help,     will they?
They wo n’t report   us, will they?
I can never do   it right, can I?
We must n’t tell   her, must we?
He should n’t drive   so fast, should he?
You wo n’t be   late, will you?
You     are n’t English, are you?
John     was not there, was he?

Notice that in the tag, we repeat the auxiliary verb, not the main verb. Except, of course, for the verb be in present simple and past simple.

Now let’s look at how to answer tag questions.

Answering Tag Questions

How do we answer a tag question? Often, we just say Yes or No. Sometimes we may repeat the tag and reverse it (They don’t live here, do they? Yes, they do). Be very careful about answering tag questions. In some languages, an opposite system of answering is used, and non-native English speakers sometimes answer in the wrong way. This can lead to a lot of confusion!

Answer a tag question according to the truth of the situation. Your answer reflects the real facts, not (necessarily) the question.

For example, everyone knows that snow is white. Look at these questions, and the correct answers:

tag question correct answer
Snow is white, isn’t it? Yes (it is). the answer is the same in both cases – because snow IS WHITE! but notice the change of stress when the answerer does not agree with the questioner
Snow isn’t white, is it? Yes it is!
Snow is black, isn’t it? No it isn’t! the answer is the same in both cases – because snow IS NOT BLACK!
Snow isn’t black, is it? No (it isn’t).

In some languages, people answer a question like “Snow isn’t black, is it?” with “Yes” (meaning “Yes, I agree with you”). This is the wrong answer in English!

Here are some more examples, with correct answers:

  • The moon goes round the earth, doesn’t it? Yes, it does.
  • The earth is bigger than the moon, isn’t it? Yes.
  • The earth is bigger than the sun, isn’t it? No, it isn’t!
  • Asian people don’t like rice, do they? Yes, they do!
  • Elephants live in Europe, don’t they? No, they don’t!
  • Men don’t have babies, do they? No.
  • The English alphabet doesn’t have 40 letters, does it? No, it doesn’t.

Now we can look at some special cases with tag questions.

Tag Question Special Cases

Negative Adverbs

The adverbs never, rarely, seldom, hardly, barely and scarcely have a negative sense. Even though they may be in a positive statement, the feeling of the statement is negative. We treat statements with these words like negative statements, so the question tag is normally positive. Look at these examples:

positive statement treated as negative statement positive tag
He never came again, did he?
She can rarely come these days, can she?
You hardly ever came late, did you?
I barely know you, do I?
You would scarcely expect her to know that, would you?

Intonation

We can change the meaning of a tag question with the musical pitch of our voice. With rising intonation, it sounds like a real question. But if our intonation falls, it sounds more like a statement that doesn’t require a real answer:

  intonation
You don’t know where my wallet is, do you? / rising real question
It’s a beautiful view, isn’t it? \ falling not a real question

Imperatives

Sometimes we use question tags with imperatives (invitations, orders), but the sentence remains an imperative and does not require a direct answer. We use won’t for invitations. We use can, can’t, will, would for orders.

  imperative + question tag notes:
invitation Take a seat, won’t you? polite
order Help me, can you? quite friendly
Help me, can’t you? quite friendly (some irritation?)
Close the door, would you? quite polite
Do it now, will you. less polite
Don’t forget, will you. with negative imperatives only will is possible

Same-Way Tag Questions

Although the basic structure of tag questions is positive-negative or negative-positive, it is sometimes possible to use a positive-positive or negative-negative structure. We use same-way tag questions to express interest, surprise, anger etc, and not to make real questions.

Look at these positive-positive tag questions:

  • So you’re having a baby, are you? That’s wonderful!
  • She wants to marry him, does she? Some chance!
  • So you think that’s amusing, do you? Think again.

Negative-negative tag questions usually sound rather hostile:

  • So you don’t like my looks, don’t you? (British English)

Asking For Information Or Help

Notice that we often use tag questions to ask for information or help, starting with a negative statement. This is quite a friendly/polite way of making a request. For example, instead of saying “Where is the police station?” (not very polite), or “Do you know where the police station is?” (slightly more polite), we could say: “You wouldn’t know where the police station is, would you?” Here are some more examples:

  • You don’t know of any good jobs, do you?
  • You couldn’t help me with my homework, could you?
  • You haven’t got $10 to lend me, have you?

Some More Special Cases

I am right, aren’t I? aren’t I (not amn’t I)
You have to go, don’t you? you (do) have to go…
I have been answering, haven’t I? use first auxiliary
Nothing came in the post, did it? treat statements with nothing, nobody etc like negative statements
Let’s go, shall we? let’s = let us
He‘d better do it, hadn’t he? he had better (no auxiliary)

Now we’ll look at some examples of tag questions of all types.

Mixed Examples of Tag Questions

Here is a list of examples of tag questions in different contexts. Notice that some are “normal” and others seem to break all the rules:

  • But you don’t really love her, do you?
  • This’ll work, won’t it?
  • Oh you think so, do you?
  • Well, I couldn’t help it, could I?
  • But you’ll tell me if she calls, won’t you?
  • We’d never have known, would we?
  • Oh you do, do you?
  • The weather’s bad, isn’t it?
  • You won’t be late, will you?
  • Nobody knows, do they?
  • You never come on time, do you?
  • You couldn’t help me, could you?
  • You think you’re clever, do you?
  • So you don’t think I can do it, don’t you? (British English)
  • Shut up, will you!
  • She can hardly love him after all that, can she?
  • Nothing will happen, will it?

Now, let’s check your understanding of tag questions, shall we?

Question Tag السؤال المذيل

Question Tag السؤال المذيل

سمي بهذا الاسم لأنه سؤال يأتي في ذيل الجملة أي نهايتها ويكون معناه “أليس كذلك؟”

طريقة تكوين سؤال مذيل:

  1. ضع فاصلة comma.
  2. ابحث عن فعل مساعد auxiliary verb داخل الجملة وهو أحد الكلمات التالية:

(am-is-are-was-were-do-does-did-have-has-had-will-would-can-could-shall-should-may-might-must)

فإذا وجدت واحداًً من هذه الكلمات ضعه بعد الفاصلة..

أما إذا لم تجد، ضع do أو does أو did..

لاحظ أن do تأتي في المضارع لو كان الفاعل (I,we,you,they)..

لاحظ أن does تأتي في المضارع لو كان الفاعل (he,she,it)..

لاحظ أن did تأتي في الماضي مع أي فاعل.

  1. قم بتحويل النفي إلى إثبات والإثبات إلى نفي.
  2. ضع الفاعل في هيئة ضمير.
  3. ضع علامة استفهام question mark (?).

مثال للتوضيح:

Maher is studying English now ……………………….

►Maher is studying English now, isn’t he?

توضيح لما تم فعله:

أولاً تم وضع فاصلة. ثانياً تم البحث عن فعل مساعد فوجدنا is فوضعنا is بعد الفاصلة. ثالثاً حولنا is المثبتة إلى نفي isn’t. رابعاً الفاعل هنا هو ماهر والضمير الذي يناسبه هو he. وأخيراً وضعنا علامة استفهام.

مثال آخر للتوضيح:

Sara wasn’t out, ………………………

► Sara wasn’t out, was she?

توضيح لما تم فعله:

أولاً تم وضع فاصلة. ثانياً تم البحث عن فعل مساعد فوجدنا was فوضعنا was بعد الفاصلة. ثالثاً حولنا wasn’t المنفية إلى إثبات was. رابعاً الفاعل هنا هو سارة والضمير الذي يناسبها هو she. وأخيراً وضعنا علامة استفهام.

مثال آخر للتوضيح:

Eman plays tennis every day…………..

► Eman plays tennis every day, doesn’t she?

توضيح لما تم فعله:

أولاً تم وضع فاصلة. ثانياً تم البحث عن فعل مساعد فلم نجد فوضعنا does لأن الجملة في المضارع والفاعل هو إيمان she. ثالثاً حولنا does المثبتة إلى نفي doesn’t. رابعاً الفاعل هنا هو إيمان والضمير الذي يناسبها هو she. وأخيراً وضعنا علامة استفهام.

Question tags

Question tags with sentences that have the structure (be + to + infinitive)

Not all sentences can form tag questions, and not all sentences are natural with tags. There has to be a reason for a tag — to check whether something is true or to ask for agreement, or to ask for help or information.

When the structure be + to-infinitive occurs in a sentence, the tag, if it is appropriate, is based on the verb be and follows the usual rules.

Obama is to meet the Chinese president soon, isn’t he?

John was to wash the dishes before he played, wasn’t he?

We weren’t to make any noise, were we? (= we were ordered not to make noise)

When a statement has indefinite pronouns such as anybody, anyone, everyone, everybody, the tag uses they with a plural verb, with a gender-neutral singular meaning.

Everyone is here, aren’t they?

Anyone can do that, can’t they?

When a statement has a singular noun referring to a human that is marked for gender, the pronoun in the tag should take the corresponding pronoun.

Every boy deserves fudge, doesn’t he?

Each girl got a certificate, didn’t she?

A problem arises when there is a singular noun referring to a human that is not marked for gender. Most nouns referring to humans fall into this category: baby, child, teacher, student, doctor, lawyer, nurse, citizen, resident, etc.

In modern English there is a strong tendency to remain gender neutral. Since English does not have a gender-neutral singular pronoun, they is often used with a plural verb but a singular meaning.

Some people think that the use of singular they is only correct when they refers to an indefinite pronoun. Such people would likely use the pronoun he in a tag in this situation.

However, others disagree with this, and many examples of singular nouns followed by singular they can be found in corpora (large collections of transcribed speech and written language used for linguistic analysis). At least in speech and everyday writing, singular they is becoming more widespread. And question tags are mostly found in (informal) speech.

One way to avoid the problem is to make sentence plural.

All the children won prizes, didn’t they?

I don’t think there are any sentences in the Hello! books that would present this dilemma to students, and I hope that none would show on an exam.

We have used singular they in the Hello! series, and since question tags are informal, I think singular they is appropriate in such situations. Note this caveat: We have nothing to do with writing the exams and setting the model answers. I don’t know what a more conservative examiner might think of such usage.

Indefinite pronouns everybody, everyone, nobody, no one are replaced by the pronoun they in tags.

Everyone likes pizza, don’t they?

But in your sentence you have a singular noun (girl) as the subject, and it is marked for the feminine gender. The determiner every doesn’t change the tag. Make the tag in the usual way.

Every girl likes pizza, doesn’t she?

However, if the singular noun is a human but not marked for gender (teacher, student, doctor, resident, etc.), there are different opinions.

Question tag for this sentence?: It’s very important that we eat healthy food.

This is a complex sentence. The “classic” tag is based on the subject and verb in the main clause (shown in red).

It’s very important that we eat healthy food, isn’t it?

In real life the speaker might use a different tag to ask for agreement, since this sentence is actually expressing an opinion. However, this is not what is expected of students on an exam.

It’s very important that we eat healthy food, don’t you think?

It’s very important that we eat healthy food, right?

It’s very important that we eat healthy food, don’t you agree?

When the main clause starts with words such as I think, the tag is formed on the subordinate clause. In the sentence below, the tag is formed on the first subordinate clause.

I think it’s very important that we eat healthy food, isn’t it? (NOT I think it’s very important … don’t I?)

First of all, not every sentence can take a tag — at least not the classic one that is taught in the textbook. If a sentence expresses my opinion, then it makes no sense to add a tag to ask for confirmation of my opinion. I might add a fixed-expression tag to ask whether you agree with me, such as right or don’t you think.

Second, in a complex sentence, the usual tag (the one that is taught in the book) is based on verb in the main clause, unless the main clause expresses the speaker’s opinion (I think, I believe, We feel, etc.). A mandative subjunctive is found in the subordinate clause, not the main clause, so it does not affect the tag. The subjunctive only appears in the third person singular form (subject of the verb is he, she, or it).

In these examples, the main clause and the tag based on it are in red. The subordinate clause with a mandative subjunctive is in blue.

He suggests that she borrow a necklace, doesn’t he?

It is essential that he take his medicine regularly, isn’t it?

The council recommended that the work week be only five days, didn’t it? (or didn’ they? Council can take a singular or plural verb)

Peter promised to buy his daughter a car on condition that she do well on her exams, didn’t he?

================================================================

The verb have has several different uses in English. You need to understand its use in a sentence to be able to form the question tag correctly.

(1) As a semi-modal

In this sentence, has to is a semi-modal showing obligation or necessity. It forms a question with do, unlike the full modals that appear in question tags without do. Compare this to a similar sentence using the full modal must.

(1) A lorry driver has to get a commercial licence, doesn’t he? (doesn’t she is also grammatically correct)

(2) A lorry driver must get a commercial licence, mustn’t he?

The full modals are can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must. We have taught the semi-modals have to and need to along with the modals because of their meaning, but they behave differently in tags.

(2) As a lexical verb showing possession

Have can also be a lexical verb with various meanings. When it shows possession, the question tag in modern British English and American English is formed with do. (In older English the tag could be made without do, but this is now old-fashioned and rare.)

(3) Henry has six fingers, doesn’t he?

(4) Henry has six fingers, hasn’t he?  (old-fashioned)

(5) Henry doesn’t have six fingers, does he?

(6) Henry hasn’t six fingers, has he? (old-fashioned)

(3) As a lexical verb with other meanings

Have can be a lexical verb with other meanings, such as eat, drink, enjoy, experience: have dinner, have tea, have a good time, have a safe trip, etc. The question tag is always formed with do.

(7) You have lunch at two o’clock, don’t you?

(8) He didn’t have a pleasant journey, did he?

(4) As a helping (auxiliary) verb

Have can also be a helping verb used with the perfect tenses. Then the question tag uses the corresponding form of have.

(9) You‘ve eaten all the cake, haven’t you?

(10) She hasn’t finished her homework, has she?

(11) They hadn’t slept well before they travelled, had they?

If this appears a bit complicated, your students actually only have to recognize whether have is a helping verb with a perfect tense. If it’s a helping verb, the tag is made without do. In other uses, the tag is made with do.

==========================================================

There is a historical reason for this. When contractions came into the language around 1600, there was a form amn’t (which still is used in Ireland and Scotland), which was often pronounced an’t because the m and n together are difficult to pronounce. But these contractions were never as commonly used as others.

In some areas, the a in an’t was pronounced like ay, which led to ain’t. But this form today is not accepted in standard English except humorously in a few fixed phrases (You ain’t seen nothin’ yet).

In other areas the a in an’t was drawn out so that the word was pronounced much like aren’t (where the r is not pronounced), which seems to have led to aren’t I. But still the contraction an’t was not widely accepted, so that today we say I’m not, but not I an’t or I amn’t.

So aren’t I is the standard tag question. Am I not can be used but sounds very formal. Tag questions are most often used in informal speech, so aren’t I is the form you should teach your students.

************************************************************

Not all sentences can take the usual (“classic”) tag that is taught in the book. This is an example of a sentence that cannot take the usual tag. I don’t think this would be a valid exam question.

This sentence is not expressing the speaker’s opinion the way that verbs such as think and believe do. It makes no sense for me (the speaker) to ask for confirmation of what I suggested. I know what I suggested.

I could add a fixed-phrase tag to ask whether you (the listener) agree with me. For example:

I suggest that she borrow a necklace, don’t you? (= don’t you agree?)

I suggest that she borrow a necklace, what do you think?

What are the question tags for these statements? She refused any help, …? He disagreed with what I said, …? Will the question tag be affirmative, as the two sentences convey a negative meaning?

No, the question tags follow the usual rules because the verbs are grammatically positive.

She refused any help, didn’t she?

He disagreed with what I said, didn’t he?

In contrast:

She didn’t accept any help, did she?

He didn’t agree with me, did he?
